Hours: Estimated to be 2 hours per month
Description:

The Department of Physics is seeking a motivated and responsible student to assist with public astronomy events and educational programming at the Thomas More Observatory. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in astronomy, science outreach, and hands-on experience with telescope operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with setup and takedown of equipment for public lecture series events and other observatory activities

  • Support faculty and staff during events, including helping guests with telescope use and answering general questions

  • Participate in a mandatory training session on telescope operations prior to the first event

  • Provide a welcoming and educational experience for visitors

Time Commitment:
Approximately 2 hours per month. All events are scheduled on Saturday evenings. Attendance is required for the following dates (weather permitting):

  • September 21, 2024: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

  • October 12, 2024: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

  • November 9, 2024: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

  • February 8, 2025: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

  • March 8, 2025: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

  • April 12, 2025: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

  • + One additional training night (to be scheduled)

Requirements:

  • Must be a Physics or Mathematics major/minor, or have completed an Astronomy lecture and lab course

  • Comfortable working outdoors at night and in varying weather conditions

  • Dependable, punctual, and capable of interacting with the public in a professional manner

  • Must be in good academic standing
