Course Description:

Prerequisites: THE 151 or THE 157 or Sophomore: “Restless Hearts” explores the enduring human desire for meaning through the lens of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Inspired by Augustine of Hippo’s famous insight that “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You,” this course investigates how the longing for truth, beauty, goodness, and love has been expressed across literature, visual art, music, and architecture. Through engaging both sacred and secular texts and artistic expressions, students will encounter various expressions of the meaning of life in order to deepen and sharpen their own work of discovering meaning in their lives. This course invites students into a conversation that is at once intellectual and personal: the universal human quest for meaning and the Catholic claim that this longing ultimately finds its fulfillment in God.
