Thomas More University is seeking an individual possessing a combination of Cultural Competency, Leadership, and Knowledge of Immigration and Compliance Regulations to be an on-site Director of Global Education and Designated School Official (DSO)

The Director of Global Education and DSO is responsible for leading the institution’s international programs, managing relationships with foreign partner institutions, overseeing study abroad opportunities, and ensuring compliance with federal immigration regulations for international students and scholars. This role involves advising students on immigration matters, developing policies that enhance global education, and ensuring the institution's compliance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

What you will do:

International Student Services:

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO), managing compliance with SEVP requirements, including timely and accurate SEVIS reporting.
  • Advise international students on F-1 visa regulations, immigration status maintenance, employment options, and related topics.
  • Develop and implement orientation programs for international students to support their transition to campus and the U.S.
  • Provide ongoing guidance on cultural adjustment, academic success, and personal matters.
  • Assist international students in navigating immigration issues such as visa renewals, reinstatements, and Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Global Education and Study Abroad:

  • Lead the development, promotion, and administration of study abroad programs and partnerships with international institutions.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, and external organizations to enhance global learning opportunities.
  • Establish partnerships with foreign universities and agencies to create new international exchange and collaborative programs.
  • Provide pre-departure and re-entry orientation and advising for students participating in study abroad programs.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Ensure the institution remains compliant with U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State regulations governing international students and exchange visitors.
  • Oversee audits and updates of SEVIS records, I-20 forms, and other necessary documentation.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and provide training to institutional staff on international student issues and compliance.
  • Ensure institutional policies and procedures align with federal regulations and support international student success.

Leadership and Administration:

  • Develop and implement the strategic vision for the Global Education Office in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Lead and supervise the Global Education staff, including advisors, coordinators, and administrative support.
  • Manage the department’s budget and resources to optimize program offerings and support services.
  • Develop marketing and outreach strategies to promote international student services, study abroad opportunities, and global engagement on campus.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for government agencies, international organizations, and embassies regarding international student and scholar matters.

Advising and Support:

  • Provide high-quality advising on academic, cultural, and personal issues to international students, offering guidance on maintaining status and adapting to life in the U.S.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and administration on issues related to international students and global education.
  • Offer mediation and conflict resolution services to address issues between students, faculty, and staff when cultural misunderstandings arise.

What you will bring:

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in International Education, Higher Education, or a related field preferred.

  • Experience:  Minimum 3-5 years of experience working with international students or global education programs, preferably in a higher education setting.

    • Prior experience as a DSO or ARO (Alternate Responsible Officer) highly desirable.
  • Skills and Competencies:

    • Strong knowledge of U.S. immigration laws and regulations, especially related to F-1 and J-1 visas.
    • Proven experience managing SEVIS reporting and compliance with federal regulations.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills.
    • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
    • Proficiency in data management systems, including SEVIS and international student management software.
    • High level of organization and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Other Requirements:

    • U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency, as required by the Department of Homeland Security to bea DSO.
    • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, as needed.
    •  Proficiency in a second language preferred.
    • Experience developing and managing international partnerships and study abroad programs preferred.
    • Strong understanding of global trends and their impact on higher education preferred.
