Organic Chemistry
Dan Esterline is the organic chemist at Thomas More University. Dr. Esterline sprouted as a farm boy in Preble County, Ohio where he enjoyed playing football and the clarinet as well as installing carpet with his father. His strong interest in chemistry was nurtured through the wonderful teaching of Mr. Jerry Thompson. After graduating from National Trail High School in 1979, Dan attended Wright State University where he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry and spent 2.5 rigorous years in their school of medicine. Dr. Esterline returned to his “true love” of chemistry and completed a Master’s Degree in 1989 with research involving the synthesis of sydnone derivatives under the tutelage of Dr. Kenneth Turnbull. Dan then turned his interest towards further graduate school, completing a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry in 1993 at Miami University working with Dr. Richard Taylor who helped Dr. Esterline develop a desire to teach. Dan’s Ph.D. research included “Approaches Towards the Synthesis of Isabelin and Megaphone” as well as “Methods of Transition Metal Removal from Used Motor Oil”. Dr. Esterline then taught at Heidelberg College for 15 years (1993-2008) where he became a tenured full professor and Chair of the Chemistry Department before taking his current post at Thomas More University. Dan’s undergraduate research areas includes topics such as enzyme kinetic studies of egg lysozyme, synthesis of epothilone precursors, microwave synthetic organic reactions, isolation and reactions of carvone from caraway seeds and spearmint leaves, and electrophilic substitution of halogenated phenylsydnones. Dan’s interests include jogging, eating, weight-lifting, construction/renovation, farming with his father-in-law, as well as fishing and golfing with his father.
