Jim Schuttemeyer received his M.A. in English from the University of Kentucky and completed additional graduate work at the University of Cincinnati. He was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2003, chaired the English department from 1998-2010, served as Humanties & Fine Arts Division chair 2017-19, and participated in the First Year Seminar and the Honors programs since their inceptions. Mr. Schuttemeyer has taught or designed over 60 English courses, and has taught dramatic literature Study Abroad courses in England and Ireland. He served as a faculty mentor to Sigma Tau Delta, the English honorary society, and as a Faculty Liaison to Athletic Team (FLAT) for both men and women's basketball. His teaching interests include Shakespeare, 19th and 20th century British literature, African-American literature, and literature of the American South, Comedy in its various guises, the search for the great white whale, and the life and times of Gulley Jimson. He makes regular pilgrimages to Taiwan for textured tofus, giant mangoes, and avocado-soy shakes. Other interests include cosmology, theoretical physics, evolutionary biology, history and archeology, and the slow painful absorption of Mandarin Chinese vocabulary.
