PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of this Policy is to define eligibility standards for participation in the University’s insurance benefit program.

DEFINITIONS

Regular Full-Time Employees: Employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 37.5 hours per week and who maintain continuous regular employment status.

Regular Part-Time Employees: Employees who work an average of between twenty and less than 37.5 hours per week throughout a 12-month period and who maintain continuous regular employment status.  Regular part-time employees will be eligible for benefits only as specifically outlined under the provisions dealing with benefit plans.

THE POLICY

It is the policy of Thomas More University to provide a comprehensive insurance benefit program as follows:

Regular Full-time and Part-time employees as defined by this Policy will be offered medical insurance.  Regular Full-time employees are also provided eligibility to enroll in other voluntary insurance programs.  The initial eligibility date is the first of the month after date of hire.  If the date of hire is the first of the month the employee is eligible immediately.

RELATED POLICIES AND APPLICABLE LEGAL OR ACCREDITATION STANDARDS

Not Applicable.

PROCEDURES

An annual open enrollment period is held each spring, with the effective change date being June 1.   This is the only time an employee may change from one plan to another or add or drop coverage unless a significant life event occurs such as the birth of a child or a change in marital status.  Insurers, plan details, and premiums may also be changed each year before open enrollment.

Enrollment in any of the University’s medical or other voluntary insurance programs is not automatic.  Application forms, specific plan details, and costs are available from the Human Resources Office.
