Course Description:
Prerequisite: PSY 105 or Sophomore Standing. A great deal of research has been done in the area of positive psychology and subjective well-being. That is, what makes for a meaningful or satisfying life? What brings happiness? What are the consequences of pursuing money, status, and power? What can you do to improve your own well-being? Researchers have examined the relationship between life satisfaction and personality, values, material wealth, religion, marital status, employment, race, gender, culture--and reached some surprising conclusions. We will review research in these areas and try to address the question of what constitutes a good life. The class will include readings from selected articles and chapters, student presentations, an empirical replications, and class activities.
