Course Description:

Crosslisted with HIS 274: This course examines the historical origins and legal development of the American idea of freedom. Where did this idea come from? Is it unique to American society? How did this idea of freedom change over time in different historical contexts? We will critically engage these core questions as we examine the legal, political, and economic debates and struggles that informed American ideas and practices of freedom.
